India's Last Great Frontier

North East India is one of the world's last great unexplored travel frontiers — a land of extraordinary biodiversity, ancient tribal cultures, living architectural wonders, and landscapes that seem untouched by time. This tour takes you through two remarkable states: Assam and Meghalaya, each with a personality as distinct as their geography.

Begin in Guwahati — the gateway city of the North East — on the banks of the mighty Brahmaputra river. Drive up into the misty hills of Meghalaya to Shillong, the "Scotland of the East," with its pine-draped hillsides, Welsh-influenced music culture, and vibrant Khasi heritage. Descend further to Cherrapunji — once the wettest place on earth — famous for its extraordinary double-decker living root bridges grown from the roots of ancient rubber trees. Return to Assam for the grand finale: Kaziranga National Park, home to two-thirds of the world's remaining Indian one-horned rhinoceroses and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Your private driver — experienced on North East roads including the challenging Assam-Meghalaya hill stretches — handles all logistics so you can absorb every breathtaking moment.

01
Day 1
Arrive Guwahati — Gateway to the North East
Your driver picks you up from Guwahati Airport (Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International) or railway station. Check in and visit the ancient Kamakhya Temple — one of India's most powerful Shakti peethas, perched dramatically on Nilachal Hill with panoramic views of the Brahmaputra. Evening sunset cruise on the Brahmaputra river — the mightiest river of the North East — with views of Umananda Island (smallest inhabited river island in the world).

02
Day 2
Guwahati to Shillong — Scotland of the East
Drive 100 km up into the Meghalaya hills to Shillong — capital of Meghalaya and one of India's most unique cities. En route, stop at Nongpoh. Explore Shillong's Ward's Lake, the Don Bosco Museum (a stunning seven-level museum of North East tribal culture and heritage), and the Police Bazar market area. Evening stroll around Shillong Peak for views over the city and hills.

03
Day 3
Shillong — Elephant Falls, Mawphlang & Markets
Full day around Shillong. Morning at Elephant Falls — a three-tiered waterfall in the Khasi hills. Drive to Mawphlang Sacred Forest — an ancient forest preserved by the Khasi tribe for over 700 years, where no leaf may be removed. Afternoon visit to the Khasi Heritage Village and explore Shillong's lively music cafes and food scene — the city has a remarkable rock music culture unlike anywhere else in India.

Day 4
Cherrapunji — World's Wettest Place & Living Root Bridges
Drive 53 km to Cherrapunji (Sohra) — the land of clouds, waterfalls, and one of the world's most extraordinary natural wonders. Morning trek to the Double-Decker Living Root Bridge at Nongriat village — a 3-hour round trek through jungle, suspension bridges, and stone steps, culminating at a bridge grown over 500 years from the roots of Ficus elastica trees. Afternoon at the breathtaking Nohkalikai Falls — India's tallest plunge waterfall at 340 m — dropping into an emerald green pool.

Day 5
Dawki & Mawlynnong — Asia's Cleanest Village
Drive to Dawki — where the Umngot river flows over white sand and pebbles so clear you can see the riverbed from a boat (the boats appear to float on air). Take a boat ride on this impossibly transparent river. Continue to Mawlynnong — declared Asia's Cleanest Village — a beautifully kept Khasi village of bamboo dustbins, hanging gardens, and a sky walk offering views over Bangladesh. Return to Shillong or overnight in Cherrapunji.

Day 6
Drive to Kaziranga National Park
Drive back down from Meghalaya through Guwahati and continue east towards Kaziranga (approx. 4–5 hrs). En route, stop at the Hajo pilgrimage site — sacred to Hindus, Muslims, and Buddhists alike. Arrive Kaziranga by afternoon. Settle in at a jungle resort on the edge of the national park. Evening nature walk or visit to the park entrance viewpoint as the sun sets over the tall elephant grass.

Day 7
Kaziranga — Jeep Safari & Elephant Safari
Early morning jeep safari in Kaziranga's Central Range — the best zone for Indian one-horned rhinoceroses, which are so plentiful here they outnumber safari vehicles. Spot rhinos, wild elephants, water buffalos, swamp deer, and if lucky, tigers and leopards. Afternoon elephant-back safari through the tall grasslands for an intimate wildlife experience at ground level. Evening at the Orchid Park and Kaziranga National Orchid & Biodiversity Park.

Day 8–9 (Optional Extension)

Travel Tips

Best Time to Visit
October to April is ideal — clear skies, all roads open, Kaziranga safaris fully operational. Avoid June–September (intense monsoon, landslides on Meghalaya roads, Kaziranga floods). November–February is peak season with the best wildlife visibility in Kaziranga.
What to Pack
Pack light layers — North East evenings are cool year-round. Carry a waterproof jacket (Cherrapunji can rain even in dry months), good trekking shoes for the root bridge trail, insect repellent, and a raincover for your camera. A light fleece is useful in Shillong at night.
Root Bridge Trek
The Nongriat double-decker living root bridge involves a 3-hour round trek with 3,500+ steps. Wear sturdy footwear, start before 8 AM to avoid heat, and carry water. The trek is moderately challenging but enormously rewarding — one of India's most unique experiences.
Inner Line Permits
Assam and Meghalaya do not require Inner Line Permits for Indian citizens. Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit for some zones. Our team will advise on all permit requirements specific to your nationality and route during booking.
